An imaginary stage, ephemeral by nature; a geometric figure — the circle — inside which a white star is drawn. The central point of the star defines a space of one square meter in which to test one’s limits. A surface in bright tones ranging from yellow to violet and from aqua green to turquoise is fully spread across the floor of the Brancaccio terrace. To understand its nature, one must fly above it.

The work recalls and celebrates the figure of the soubrette “Bianca Star,” who lived — almost in seclusion — in a corner of Palazzo Brancaccio in Rome during the 1950s, forgotten by all. At the same time, the piece embraces the core theme of the 1m³ event, which reflects on the relationship between body and space — a limited space. Once the floor installation was completed, performers and dancers became the protagonists of a drone-shot video filmed at the center of the white star.

“Bianca Star” is a floor installation created by artist Viola Pantano as part of the 1m³ 2021 event, conceived by choreographer Alessia Gatta with the aim of creating a place to share experiences and explore new ways of living dance, theatre, art, and nature. The unique historical moment experienced in the first half of 2020 established new rules, followed by new visions. Within this so-called “new normal,” the concept 1m³ emerged as a symbolic limit — to be respected or overcome — and as a starting point for reflection, creation, and transformation.

The project involved 30 students, actors, performers, and artists between the ages of 18 and 35. Drawing from post-lockdown rules as a conceptual framework, “Bianca Star” proposes a restricted space to inhabit, experience, walk across, and engage with as a stimulus for interaction. The research and creative process also led to the production of a participatory video-dance work generated directly from the floor installation.

The work was produced by the association [Matrice] N and the Brancaccio theatre dance school “Brancaccio Danza,” in collaboration with the ArtSite Fest, which provided technical, logistical, and operational support, and the art platform Ada by Carlotta Mastroianni.

Un palcoscenico immaginario, effimero per sua natura; una figura geometrica, quella del cerchio, all’interno del quale è rappresentata una stella bianca. Il punto centrale della stella delimita uno spazio di 1 mq dove poter sperimentare i propri limiti. Un piano dai toni brillanti — dal giallo al viola e dal verde acqua al turchese — è interamente disteso sul pavimento della terrazza Brancaccio. Per comprenderne la natura bisogna volargli sopra.

L’opera vuole ricordare e celebrare la figura della soubrette “Bianca Star”, che negli anni Cinquanta ha abitato — quasi rifugiandosi — un angolo di Palazzo Brancaccio a Roma, dimenticata da tutti. Allo stesso tempo, il lavoro si lega alla tematica intrinseca dell’evento 1m³, che propone una riflessione sul corpo e sullo spazio — uno spazio limitato. Una volta ultimata l’opera pavimentale, performer e danzatori sono stati protagonisti di un video girato con drone al centro della stella bianca.

“Bianca Star” è un’opera pavimentale realizzata dall’artista Viola Pantano nell’ambito dell’evento 1m³ 2021, ideato dalla coreografa Alessia Gatta con lo scopo di creare un luogo in cui condividere esperienze ed esplorare nuovi modi di vivere la danza, il teatro, l’arte e la natura. Il momento storico vissuto nella prima metà del 2020, unico nel suo genere, ha stabilito nuove regole e nuove visioni. In questa cosiddetta “nuova normalità” nasce il concept 1m³, un limite simbolico da rispettare o oltrepassare, come spunto di riflessione per creare ed evolversi.

Il progetto ha coinvolto 30 allievi, attori, performer e artisti tra i 18 e i 35 anni. Attraverso il canovaccio delle regole post-lockdown, “Bianca Star” suggerisce uno spazio ristretto da abitare, vivere, calpestare e fruire come stimolo di interazione. Il percorso di ricerca e creazione ha inoltre condotto alla realizzazione di un’opera di video-danza partecipata, nata direttamente dall’installazione pavimentale.

L’opera è stata realizzata dall’associazione [Matrice] N e dalla scuola di ballo del Teatro Brancaccio “Brancaccio Danza”, in collaborazione con il festival ArtSite Fest, che ha fornito supporto tecnico, logistico e operativo, e con la piattaforma d’arte Ada di Carlotta Mastroianni.
